The thing with TV shows is convincing the audience that the characters are real enough for everyone to care about them. Desert Rose managed to do that, and more, because we hated Freddy Greyling, patriarch, for leaving his family; and Eugene van As for bringing clouds to Eben’s eyes and making all the siblings pay for Freddy’s debt; and we rooted for every other Greyling family member because their pain became our pain.
What made the characters even more realistic was the language they used: no filter. Sure, it was in the late night slot too so no little people ears would hear the vulgarities. We’ve documented a few such phrases on out Twitter feed and we look back on it.
