Fantasy & for real on DStv Family this June
From the autopsy table to the next-door neighbours, DStv Family is analysing local life this June, before whisking us far away and long ago
Whether you like your TV to deal with here and now, or a faraway fantasy land, DStv Family is the place to be this June.
For local flavour we have Soso Rungqu asking what the neighbours are up to in Umakhelwane Season 1, Linda Sibiya is getting between fighting husbands and wives in Unzima Umshado Season 1, and South African forensic pathologist Dr. Hestelle van Staden is giving us a look inside real-life crime solving in SA in the fascinating Outopsie Season 1.
Less real but still with all the feels we have the return of episodic fantasy series, The Outpost Season 4, the launch of our brand-new romantic telenovela obsessions, My Desire Season 1, and a deep dive into another world in times gone by in the National Geographic (DStv Channel 181) documentary series Vikings: The Rise And Fall Season 1
PS: and since June is Pride month, the local stories of courage in Coming Out Season 1 on Moja Love (DStv Channel 157) are a must-watch.
Read on for more about all these shows, including all the details of where you can watch the action from The Queen’s Jubilee below, and check out the highlights on the other packages. You’ve made it to mid-year 2022 and it’s treat yourself time!
5 must-see series
Umakhelwane Season 1
What are the neighbours up to? Actress and singer Soso Rungqu twitches the curtain to peer inside the world of “the next-doors” – how our relationships with them go wrong and how feuds begin, leaving you unable to escape someone who steals, gets physically violent, tells your business around town, or who’s blaming you for allowing abuse to happen next door. Soso then plays negotiator to show us how to mend fences.
Watch Umakhelwane Season 1 from Sunday, 19 June at 20:30 on Moja Love (DStv Channel 157)
Unzima Umshado Season 1
Linda “Mr Magic” Sibiya? On our TVs again? We’re blessed by Moja Love. Watching him hosting the Mnakwethu reunion show was something else. In this new series, Linda is exploring more troubled marriages, as he draws on his own romantic successes and failures, to help feuding couples. Through careful conversations, Linda hopes to guide them to a peaceful resolution and a happier future in a more balanced relationship. Marriage is a hot topic, or as we say, “Ngoba phela umshado ubanjwa ushisa”.
Watch Unzima Umshado Season 1 from Sunday, 12 June at 20:00 on Moja Love (DStv Channel 157)
Outopsie Season 1
True crime enthusiasts, snap on your gloves! South African forensic pathologist Dr. Hestelle van Staden explores true crime cases in which forensic pathology played an important role. Each episode opens with Hestelle giving us the details of the forensic report and – from there – taking us deeper into the cases, including the 2016 murder of Baby Daniel, the shooting of local Reggae star Lucky Dube, and the 2015 Rhodes park gang rapes and murders.
Watch Outopsie Season 1 from Thursday, 2 June at 20:00 on VIA (DStv Channel 147)
The Outpost Season 4
Big bold worldbuilding, adventure, and fantasy await as we return to The Outpost at the edge of civilization. Garret (Jake Stormoen) is pushing for the Blackblood, Talon (Jessica Green), to take the throne following Queen Gwynn’s death, but Talon’s lack of self-confidence is holding her back. This season will see more complications arise from newly awakened gods, a new race of beings that could hold the key to Talon’s origins, and the unlocking of the city buried beneath The Outpost.
Watch The Outpost Season 4 from Saturday, 18 June at 11:00 on Universal (DStv Channel 117)
Vikings: The Rise And Fall Season 1
Fans of series like Vikings, Vikings: Valhalla and The Last Kingdom have been addicted to behind the scenes features on creating period-accurate costumes and props. But this doccie series goes further. Narrated by narrated by Ólafur Darri Ólafsson and based on research by Stefan Brink (Professor of Scandinavian Studies); Terry Gunnell (Professor of Folkloristics); Cat Jarman (Bioarchaeologist) and others, it gives us the true and fascinating details inside daily life through 300 years of the Viking Empire.
Watch Vikings: The Rise And Fall Season 1 from Wednesday, 29 June at 21:00 on National Geographic (DStv Channel 181)
My Desire Season 1
This romantic drama telenovela is a spinoff to Yeh Hai Mohabbatein (This Is Love). The series follows 2 busy people – rockstar Rudraksh Khurana (Abrar Qazi) and a gynaecologist Dr. Preesha Srinivasan (Sargun Kaur Luthra) – as they fall in love while raising their siblings’ son Saransh together. Rudra believes that Preesha is the boy’s biological mother, the 2 get married in a series of misunderstandings, and they then have to fake being in a happy marriage to stop the Child Care department from taking Saransh away. It’s a classic “married strangers” plot and we love it!
