The SAFTAs have honoured the work of four Isibaya actresses you love with nominations for prestigious awards. You love them on screen and here’s why the nominations are well-deserved.
Nomzamo Mbatha – Thandeka
Safta Nomination: Best Actress – TV Soap
She is the quintessential over-achiever: One moment she is being appointed Goodwill Ambassador by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees then the next she is nominated Best Actress in a TV Soap in the SAFTAs.
What we love most about Nomzamo Mbatha is her role as Thandeka on Isibaya. Whether she is saving her baby from the clutches of Sunday Nkabinde or sharing a romantic moment with Sbu, we can’t tell difference between Nomzamo and Thandeka: A well-deserved nomination.
Linda Sebezo – Lillian
Safta Nomination: Best Supporting Actress – TV Soap
Veteran actress Linda Sebezo is not new to award-winning. With four SAFTAs already under her belt, including one for her role on Greed and Desire, she is star status. She owns her complex role as pious and passionate Sis Lili in the Ngewnya household. One moment she is fighter and the next a comedian who always warms Mzansi hearts.
Gcina Mkhize – MaKhanyi
Safta Nomination: Best Supporting Actress – TV Soap
MaKhanyi is one in a million – truly! Her loyalty to the Ndlovu family is unrivaled and she would risk it all for legacy and her husband, Samson Ndlovu who affectionately calls her Jola. On the other hand she runs Bhubesini as if she is the queen with both terrifying and comedic resolve. Gcina Mkhize has embodied the role of MaKhanyi with such convincing skill that one moment we absolutely hate the lengths MaKhanyi would go to for her family’s way and the next we love how she disarms with comedy and manipulation.
Nokuthula Thabethe – Beauty
Safta Nomination: Best Supporting Actress – TV Soap
Whether you see Beauty as a mob wife or a woman in love and mourning her daughter, Thuli Thabethe persuades you of your conviction. We have seen Beauty living large as the wife of a high profile taxi boss to mourning her daughter tragically shot at her wedding. With each pivotal moment in Beauty’s story, Thabethe has embodied the role becoming the character to make us mourn when Beuaty mourns and celebrate when she celebrates.
