Penny Penny

Penny Penny is an icon and musical legend both in South Africa and internationally. Born Eric Kobane, Penny Penny comes from a family of 68 children and 17 wives. At the age of nineteen he left his family’s tomato farm in Mooketsi for work in the mines, where he began dominating breakdancing contests. By 1986 Penny Penny (then Eric) found himself in Joburg working a slew of jobs, including cleaning at Selwyn Shandel‘s recording studio in Joburg.

It was there that he met Shangaan producer Joe Shirimani. The two struck up a musical partnership which resulted in a double platinum debut and subsequent plantinum-selling records.

Just six months after apartheid was lifted Penny Penny’s Shaka Bundu was released and entered the consciousness of the entire country. Shaka Bundu transformed Penny Penny into a nationwide sensation.

Shaka Bundu swept the country quickly and went on to sell more than 250,000 copies in South Africa. In the years since, Penny Penny has played to thousands on stages across the continent, from Liberia and Sierra Leone to Namibia and Mozambique.

The Limpopo native was thrilled to pull the card that would see him leading the choir from his homeland. He hopes to give Limpopo their first win.
