In the penultimate episode of Queen Modjadji, darkness takes hold as the queen’s reign faces its most harrowing challenges yet. Modjadji (Makoma Mohale) is not only grappling with the overwhelming grief of losing Khadikhulu (Mudi Mudau), but is also under attack from unseen forces that threaten to destroy her kingdom and her mind. As Dzugudini’s plans (Masutang Rasekele) for an attack become clear, the fate of the Balobedu nation faces an uncertain future.
Thibule’s sorcery and the queen’s desperation
Early in the episode, Queen Modjadji visits the sacred ancestral caves to seek guidance. As she desperately calls out for their assistance, a dark force works against her. Thibule (Collen Magongwa), the sorcerer with whom Dzugudini has made a pact, uses his powers to disrupt the queen’s connection to the spiritual realm. Modjadji, sensing something is amiss, asks if she has done something for the ancestors to turn their backs on her. As she struggles to summon their presence, Thibule’s darkness surrounds her, leaving the queen more isolated and vulnerable than ever.
A gathering storm
Following this unsettling scene, a herdboy rushes to the new Khadikhulu, Kheyale (Maumela Mahuwa), with alarming news. He has spotted what appears to be an army base at the kingdom’s border, confirming the rumours of an impending attack that were initially dismissed. The royal council convenes, and it becomes clear that Dzugudini’s wrath is greater than their combined forces. The royal council immediately regrets sparing her life, recognising too late that they are now facing an enemy who is ready to destroy them all.
The people’s doubts and King Mampuru’s warning
As fear spreads through the kingdom, the people begin to lose faith in their queen. Whispers circulate that Modjadji is fragile, possibly succumbing to the same madness that claimed her father. King Mampuru (Aubrey Mmakola), observing the situation from afar, expresses pity for the Balobedu nation. He knows Dzugudini is not an enemy to be underestimated, and he warns that this is not a battle the Bapedi should involve themselves in. Yet, he hints that the queen will soon realise why she should have accepted his marriage proposal, leaving the door open for his own ambitions.
A queen haunted by spirits
Despite the mounting external threats, Modjadji’s inner turmoil continues to plague her. She is visited by the spirits of her deceased father, Mambo Mugodo (Thabo Bopape), and the late Khadikhulu. Mambo Mugodo’s spirit condemns her for not killing Dzugudini when she had the chance, blaming her for the suffering now befalling the kingdom. In contrast, Khadikhulu’s spirit pleads with her to avoid violence and instead use the powers bestowed upon her by the ancestors to save her people. Conflicted by these opposing messages, Modjadji tells Raisibe (Helen Lebepe) that she will bring rain in the morning, determined to prove her strength.
A desperate act
As dawn breaks, Modjadji climbs Lebjeni Mountain in a final attempt to summon rain and save her kingdom. But as she reaches the peak and calls upon the ancestors, Thibule’s dark magic intervenes one last time. The episode ends with a shocking twist: Modjadji disappears, her fate unknown, leaving the kingdom in suspense.
A kingdom in peril
As Queen Modjadji heads into its final episode, the queen’s disappearance and the looming attack by Dzugudini’s forces set the stage for a dramatic and uncertain conclusion. With the Balobedu kingdom in chaos and Modjadji’s destiny unclear, the final chapter promises to be a battle for survival and redemption.
