They say nothing ruins the taste of peanut butter like unrequited love. Balekani's love for Merriam was unrequited for the longest time. Try as he did to soften Merriam's heart, he was just met by a stone wall.
He even resorted to sending messages of love to Merriam through her friend, which annoyed Merriam more than endear her to him. By her own admission, she was scared of Balekani, as he was a famed man about town, into women and gambling.
With patience and persistence, Balekani eventually wore Merriam down and he agreed to be his love. She wasn't his only love, though. Their relationship was racked with infidelity, and Balekani couldn't keep his roving eye in check.
