couple on a date

It’s completely normal to be nervous in a first date. However, it does help to be well-prepared for it – that way you won’t waste neither your date nor your time. Plus, you don’t want to have awkward moment by accidently telling your guest you love them on the first date – avoid telling them on the first date that you love them!

On preparing yourself for the date, firstly, you need to assess what is important to you, including what values you will not compromise on. Like, is religion important to you, and would you consider dating someone who does not practice any religious practices?

A fun way to get to know someone is to ask questions that can include “would you rather” scenarios.

Be aware of not making the conversation go as an interview – keep the conversation flowing by listening to your date and prompting questions with the answers they give.

Here are some questions for you to ask on a first date:

On finding out whether they have similar interests to yours, ask:

  • Who are the special people in your life?
  • What are your hobbies; what do you do in your free time; what’s your favourite way to relax?
  • Would you rather Netflix-and-chill or go out with your partner in a large group? [This can tell you whether the person is an introvert or extrovert.]
  • What things upset you the most?
  • What are your personal values?

On how they are navigating their dating relationships

  • When it comes to communication, do you prefer texting or calling the person you’re dating?
  • What would you say is your love language? [You can explain about what love language is if they don’t understand.]
  • How do they prioritise friends or family when dating? [Find out how important this is to them versus how it is important to you.]
  • What are you looking for in a relationship?
  • What's the best advice you've ever received on love?

About their ambitions

  • What do you like about your job, and dislike about your job?
  • What is your greatest professional accomplishment? [Prompt follow-up questions to learn if they want to grow from where they currently are.]
  • Do you have any plans to study or to do something different to what you are doing now?
  • Are you working on any personal or work-related projects which requires you to invest a lot of time or money in it? [Maybe they’re busy with house renovations or are planning to move in a bigger space or are currently studying.]
  • Do you want to get married and have children, and by when do you see yourself doing this?
