After having lost her job at Legacy, Petra Potgieter managed to get an interview for another position, but one that is based in another country. We know that her dad, Willem, will miss her terribly, should she be successful in her application.
We’ve see her struggle with the decision, feeling as if is she is actually forced to go. “I feel I can't make a contribution anymore,” she says. Yet, there are many around her, particularly newcomers her boss, Nick and beau, Jonno who are subtly, and not-so-subtly, urging her to actually stay. Nick even went as far as saying that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side, and living in Europe means Petra will watch the sun set at 15:00 during the winter. It’s true. He also reminded her of long train commutes. And knowing Petra, she’d miss the sunshine too, Nick says. 🔮
On that note, here are some of the reasons why we love South Africa, while not the perfect country, it is home. It is a part of our heart beats. It runs through our blood in our veins. The country’s iridescent soul resides in each of us. 🌍
The history
While marred in a lot of pain because of colonisation and apartheid, the country has ascended those dark days. It is not something most South Africans shy away from, and it is being dealt with it on a day-by-day basis. It seeps through so many aspects of everyone’s everyday life. What it has shown us, more so than other countries, is a deep-seated respect for human rights, enshrined in our globally-admired constitution. 👌
The location
Citizens and travellers alike can see both the Atlantic and Indian oceans. And it is a sight to behold! Each has its own unique attraction, colouring the west and east coasts in its magnificent hues, making it exceptional and magnificent. The Garden Route is one road trip that is a must for all citizens and travellers. 🌊
The nature
From forest to sea; desert and mountains, the country has a biodiversity second to none! And of course, there are safaris to see the Big Five: lion, leopard, rhinoceros (both south-central black and southern white species), elephant, and Cape buffalo. Did you realise that the Kruger National Park, a definite point of national pride, is the size of Israel? 🐘
The diverse people
We’re very lucky to have all sorts of people in the country, and we do mean all sorts. The myriad of indigenous populations; from Zulus to Xhosa, the spectrum is wide; Caucasians with European ancestors, vast members of the Indian, Indonesian, and Asian diaspora; the Afrikaner and coloured populations. Our 11 official languages honours this. Did you know that South Africa has the largest Indian population outside of India? 👏
The food
We can safely say this list will entice most taste buds: braai or shisanyama, bunny chow, rusks, chakalaka, milk tart, biltong, malva pudding. Enough said. 😋
