Every Day Is Halloween ... For Women

News
07 November 2021
For the period 2019 to 2020, the SAPS crime statistics found approximately 2 695 women were murdered that year. Furthermore, every 3 hours, a woman is murdered. Every Day Is Halloween aims to bring more awareness to South Africa's worsening war on women.

Every Day Is Halloween might seem like the ideal movie for a spooky night in, but this "film" is something completely different - it's a campaign that tells the real story of a mother and daughter facing the threat of an abusive spouse. "Although Halloween movies are based on fictional violence, in South Africa, the violence perpetrated against women is sadly not fictional. This campaign relays that the danger, fear, and violence that is synonymous with the horror movie genre is experienced every day by women in our country," says Executive Head of Marketing at Multichoice South Africa, Thabisa Mkhwanazi.

Featuring Isibaya actress Ayanda Borotho as the lead, viewers are coaxed into watching this horror "movie" on DStv BoxOffice via an intensely dark and disturbing trailer.

However, when viewers click on the link to rent Every Day Is Halloween, they are instead directed to a page detailing the chilling statistics surrounding gender-based violence in South Africa. Furthermore, viewers are asked to donate R40 - by "renting" the film on Box Office - to help in the fight against domestic violence and femicide. All proceeds will go to the Uyinene Mrwetyana Foundation (UMF) launched in honour of 19-year-old university student Uyinene Mrwetyana who was brutally raped and murdered in 2019 at the Clareinch post office where she had gone to collect a parcel.

“The Uyinene Mrwetyana Foundation hopes this campaign will continue to raise awareness of gender-based violence against women while raising critical funds to help the foundation continue its work around youth empowerment, and violence prevention,” UMF Managing Director Masimbulele Buso explains.

Following the announcement of the campaign, Borotho took to Facebook to share a few more horror movies that have stuck with her over the years - horror movies which, as her video progresses, prove to be very real-life South African stories of GBV and femicide.
