Do you ever sit and watch My Kitchen Rules SA and think: I could do that? Or: I could do that better? Or: I couldn’t do that; I wouldn’t know where to start? The food and flair of the fourth season is sure to leave you inspired. So, if you’re itching to get into the kitchen and host an instant restaurant for your family or friends, here are a few tips to keep in mind.
The menu
Stick to what you know: whether it’s a tried-and-tested family recipe or a dish you’ve perfected over time. That being said, don’t be afraid to take a few risks and be creative. If you’re hosting loved ones who are familiar with your food, you can get feedback on the changes, as they’ll know what it usually tastes like. Once you’ve decided what to make, it’s time to shop. Keep your choices seasonal: not only will this make for a fresher, more local menu, but it will also reduce the cost and lower your environmental footprint. Once you head into the kitchen, remember MKRSA’s favourite mantra: Flavour, flavour, flavour!
The setting
It’s not all about the food. It’s also about how the food looks on the plate. Don’t just wallop your food onto a plate and thrust it on the table. Involve all the senses. Starting with delicious smells coming from the kitchen, heighten the experience by delivering visually. This is where you can really let your creative side come out to play.
It’s also about MOOD. Set the tone for the night when you set the table and its surroundings. Want a more serious, toned-down affair? Try low lighting and soft music. Want to amp the energy? Choose vibrant colours and even vibier music. Colours, music, and lighting all play a role.
Time management
Good food takes time, but that’s not to say you should leave your guests waiting for hours before the meal or between courses. Prepare as much as you can beforehand (much like you see the teams do on MKRSA). Plan what needs to happen when and take time into account: how long does the chicken need to roast in the oven, how long will it take the ice cream to set?
Your guests
With good food and a relaxed ambience, you’ll instantly make your guests feel at home. But, as always, it’s much more than that. Set the mood – or break the ice – with welcome drinks, but make sure you have non-alcoholic options for those who don’t drink alcohol. Keep dietary requirements and allergies in mind too…even if they are a little fancy.
And voilà: you’re ready to host an Instant Restaurant!
Martin and Eddie have set the bar for Group 1’s Instant Restaurants.
Will the other teams jump over? Will they manage their time and make their guests feel welcome? Carry on watching to find out.
