The sequel Downton Abbey: A New Era whisks you back in time and gives you a taste of the sophistication of the 1920s. The movie takes place in the south of France and the costumes reflect not only the time but the summer holiday atmosphere. With beautiful close-up shots, you can appreciate all the beauty and detail of the characters' costumes.
Let’s take a glimpse at some of these outfits.
Rich and resplendent
Myrna is a new character, played by Laura Haddock. She is poised and oozes class. One of her memorable outfits is her green hammered silk dress worn with a fur-lined coat. Everything about this outfit speaks sophistication.Â
The wonderful wedding dress
Made from delicate tulle fabric and magnificent beadwork, the wedding dress creates a fairytale feel with a dropped waist that was popular at the time. But if you've strolled through the shops recently you'll see that now, 100 years later, it's coming back. The ensemble fits beautifully on the stunning actress Tuppence Middleton who plays Lucy. The dress is accompanied by a tulle veil. Costume designer Anna Robbins said she wanted a free-flowing more modern-looking dress, especially for Lucy’s dance scenes.
Cool casual
Some of the outfits were made from linen. Back in the day, linen was considered a "poor man's fabric". But the film puts a spin on things by putting Tom in a light-coloured linen suit, making for an innovative outfit both in fabric and colour. Today, linen has become a luxury fabric, not because it's more expensive to make, but because other fabrics like cotton and synthetics have come to the fore as cheaper options.
Bathing costumes
Bathing costumes in the 1920s were not what they are today. They were fuller and much more conservative. Women's bathing suits were not the only one-piece items. Tom's bathing suit was made from knitwear and was a one-piece suit as well.
