Connecting the films of the Eastrail 177 trilogy.

When we say Glass Easter eggs, we’re not referring to fragile, breakable ornaments. We’re talking about movie Easter eggs: nods, nudges, and coy references – usually to other movies – within a movie. Glass, this week’s M-Net Sunday night movie, is full of them, connecting it to its predecessors, Unbreakable and Split.

Together these films form the Eastrail 177 trilogy, directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson star in the first, 2000’s Unbreakable, while James McAvoy is front and centre of 2016’s Split. All three actors appear in Glass.

But they’re not the only link between these three movies. There are plenty of Easter eggs in Glass, connecting all three. So if you’ve watched them before, keep an eye out for the eggs. If you haven’t watched the movie, skip the below and come back after the movie, because SPOILERS.

The three main characters in Glass are all associated with a certain colour: David’s (Bruce Willis) is green, Kevin’s (James McAvoy) is yellow, and Elijah’s (Samuel L. Jackson) is purple. Even Dr. Staple (Sarah Paulson) has a staple colour: pink.

M. Night Shyamalan directed all three films, but he also cameoed in all three. In Unbreakable he plays a drug dealer and in Split he’s a landlord. In Glass, he plays a customer in David’s store, and it’s revealed that all three characters are actually the same man.

A train accident links the films and the characters, and gives the trilogy its name: Eastrail 177. In Unbreakable, David survives a train accident. In Split, McAvoy’s character goes to a train station where his final personality is unleashed. In Glass, David’s son Joseph learns that Kevin’s father was killed on the train crash, and did not actually abandon his son.

In Glass, Casey – one of the girls Kevin kidnapped in Split – still has the jacket she received at the end of latter.

Several of Kevin’s personalities from Split make another appearance, but we’re also introduced to new ones.

The comic book shop clerk from Unbreakable makes an appearance in Glass.

The news anchor in Glass is the same anchor from Split.

Bruce Willis appears in all three movies: he makes a brief appearance  in a diner at the end of Split.
