As Cyndi Lauper said, “girls just want to have fun”. That’s certainly the case in your Sunday night movie, as Tiffany Hadish, Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, and Jada Pinkett Smith make their way to New Orleans for the ultimate girls’ trip. But it’s not all frivolous fun, as the four friends reconnect and make new memories along the way. With that in mind, we take a look at six more movies that fortify the bonds of female friendship.

  1. Absolutely Fabulous

For five seasons, Eddy and Patsy drank champagne and smoked cigarettes together in the hit BBC show, Absolutely Fabulous. In 2016, they finally got a movie in which they drink more champagne and smoke more cigarettes. Sounds fabulous, sweety darling!

  1. Bend it Like Beckham

This endearing dramedy takes a closer look at football, friendship, and the exploration of cultural and gender norms. It’s anchored by Parminder Nagra’s heartfelt performance as the central character and uplifted by a young and spirited Keira Knightley.

  1. Happiness is a Four-Letter Word

We’ve even got a South African entry on our list! This Jozi-set flick is based on the book of the same name by Cynthia Jele, which focuses on three friends trying to navigate work, romance, and family in their search for happiness.

  1. Heavenly Creatures

Kate Winslet’s stunning debut in this eerie thriller from Peter Jackson marked her as an actress to watch. Matching her step for step is New Zealand actress Melanie Lynskey, as their characters forge a friendship they’re willing to do anything to protect.

  1. Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion

Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino play the delightfully ditzy title characters of this equally delightful comedy. Friends since high school, the blonde pair take a firm look at their lives since graduating when it’s time to attend their ten-year reunion. Through a road trip, reflection, and a raucous reunion Romy and Michele realise that sometimes the only way to get through adulting is to have a good friend by your side.

  1. Waiting to Exhale

This directorial debut from Forest Whitaker brings together a tour de force of feminine talent in the form of Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, and Lela Rochon. They navigate the ups and down of their individual lives in the best way they know how: together.
