Residents of Durban have been stunned by the extended noxious fallout of a chemical warehouse set on fire by looters in last months’ violence. The company that owns the warehouse, United Phosphorus Limited (UPL), responded to our questions pertaining to the fire at its Cornubia warehouse.Â

The eThekwini Municipality also issued a response in which it stated it was "concerned about the contamination of the Ohlange River and estuary" and that the municipality is working closely with the relevant authorities to "advise on the rehabilitation and remediation of the impacted environment". Pending the release of an environmental impact report, beaches in the area remain closed.Â
