The first episode of the brand-new crime drama Lioness did not disappoint as it burst onto our screens.

From the incredible acting from some of our country’s leading talent to the jaw-dropping camera work, Lioness promises to keep us on the edge of our seats for the next 13 weeks.

The storyline might feel a little confusing as we jump back and forth through time to discover how Samantha Hugo ended up in prison for 8 years, and what happened as she served a sentence for a crime she did not commit.

Here is what we know so far.

Adrian Hugo is a very distant but hard-working husband trying to provide for his wife and 3 kids. He married Samantha very young as she fell pregnant with Miranda when she was only 17 years old.

He does not agree with Sam’s freestyle parenting and seems like the strict and performance-driven family member. Miranda is following in her dad’s footsteps by being prim and proper and striving to be the very best at everything she does. Unfortunately, this also means that she does not have a very good relationship with her mother and this was made very clear when Samantha tried to visit her after getting out on parole.

Jason, Adrian’s brother, and his wife bought the Hugo home and raised the children as their own. Megan has become a little too attached to the youngest of the 3, Caitlyn, and is not sure that she should be seeing her mother just yet.

In the flashbacks, we also meet Anton Marais who poses as an undercover security guard protecting the Hugo home, but his van full of surveillance equipment and the hidden cameras in the house tells us that he is up to something bigger.

After watching Samantha and her family for a while, Anton also develops feelings for his subject and tries to move in on Mrs. Hugo.

There is a lot more to this story, and we can’t wait to discover the truth and the deception in the coming weeks.
