𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟭𝟰 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰. Mhlengi Gwala was an avid cyclist and a professional athlete. But one early morning in 2018, his entire life changed. Three assailants pulled him from his bicycle and attempted to saw off his leg with a chainsaw. They cut through meat and bone, leaving the limb barely attached to his body. Then, as suddenly as the attack began, his attackers disappeared into the darkness. Doctors managed to save his leg and Mhlengi bravely fought back to full recovery – only to lose his leg to infection two years later. Desperate to fulfil his dreams of becoming a champion triathlete, Mhlengi had to start all over again – this time, learning how to walk with one leg before he could swim, run and cycle. It’s home to the Master’s Office that administers deceased estates and oversees liquidations - some involving major companies under investigation for millions made in the state capture years. Among the liquidators' responsibilities is attempting to recover money owed to creditors. Cloete Murray was the driving force in the liquidation of BOSASA, a company at the centre of serious allegations of fraud and corruption and owing substantial amounts to creditors including SARS. Murray wasn’t afraid of asking difficult questions of the many company directors he investigated and there were attempts to remove him from the Bosasa case that went as high as the Supreme Court of Appeal. None was successful. Murray’s story is inextricably linked to those of two senior former officials in the Master’s Office who believe they were removed because of their role in Murray’s appointment to the Bosasa liquidation. Last year, Carte Blanche told this story, and interviewed Cloete Murray. But on Saturday he and his son were shot and killed in what is believed to have been an assassination. The burial site stands as a memorial for the scores of people killed in a horrific bus crash across the border in South Africa. Just days before the start of the Easter celebrations, busloads of worshippers travelled from across Southern Africa to Moria in Limpopo for the annual ZCC pilgrimage. But these Batswana pilgrims and their bus driver never made it to the sacred place of worship. Instead, the speeding bus plunged over the bridge on the Mmamatlakala Pass. There was just one survivor – an eight-year-old girl who escaped with just minor injuries. But what really happened on the bridge? This dangerous hairpin bend on the R518 has become notorious for serious accidents and, while the authorities have suggested speeding as the primary cause of the crash, could something else have contributed to the tragic outcome?
