Biodiversity: A wild strategy
𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟱 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰. It’s a strategy that’s been in place since 2016. But in March this year, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment unveiled a revised strategy to harness our natural resources. It plans to aggressively exploit our biodiversity on a massive scale to create money and jobs. Some called it ambitious, while others sounded the alarm claiming the move to attract more international trophy hunters could make South Africa a pariah of the conservation world. Government’s plan also includes stimulating the domestic trade in ivory and rhino horn, creating health clinics and selling rhino horn to tourists from the Far East. But, if properly implemented, could the revised National Biodiversity Economy Strategy to commodify a range of wildlife and plants generate increased revenue and jobs for rural communities? Carte Blanche examines this growing controversy. Find more exclusive content on Carte Blanche: The Podcast: https://linktr.ee/carteblanchetv

Benny and the fossils
𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟮𝟰 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰. It started with a young boy playing drums on the strange rocks on his favourite Wild Coast beach. Back then, Benny Mbotho didn’t realise that his playground was a series of unique fossil beds along the shore. But thanks to his grandmother, and her love of the beach and its fossils, he began to see this coastline from a new perspective. Right in front of him were the remnants of shark teeth, giant clams and petrified tree trunks from a time long forgotten: the age of the dinosaurs. And for the past five decades, Benny has been guarding these treasures for future generations. Find more exclusive content on Carte Blanche: The Podcast: https://linktr.ee/carteblanchetv

Home of the vultures
𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟭𝟴 𝗙𝗲𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰. In the heart of the Eastern Cape, a group of White-backed and Cape vultures survey their new home. These birds are part of a group of 163 vultures moved from Vulpro, a sanctuary at Hartbeespoort in the North West, to a private game reserve in the Eastern Cape. In Africa’s largest vulture relocation, truckloads of the raptors were captured and driven over a thousand kilometres to the unspoilt wilderness at Shamwari Private Game Reserve. The new bespoke facility will focus on rehabilitation and captive breeding programmes, with the goal of releasing new generations of vultures back into the wild. Carte Blanche followed them on their long trek to their new home. Find more exclusive content on Carte Blanche: The Podcast: https://linktr.ee/carteblanchetv
