A self-styled indigenous empress poised to pay out billions of rands hidden in a secret trust to the descendants of the Khoi and San in South Africa: if only it were true. But it’s not, despite what the imperial leaders have told a vast network of WhatsApp groups where they groom poor people to pledge their scarce cash to the scheme. They say the ticket to great wealth is an Aboriginal ID, purchased online. This card will supposedly help beneficiaries cash in, and give them immunity to South African law. This scam is part of a larger movement to create a Khoisan leadership class worthy of state perks and influence. We penetrate the campaign of Empress Valerie Sabina Letsie III who revealed herself in front of Parliament this week, and identify two more groups that have taken cash from people desperate to get a cut of the multi-million rand payout that’s promised in the name of their Khoisan legacy. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟭𝟰 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰. Mhlengi Gwala was an avid cyclist and a professional athlete. But one early morning in 2018, his entire life changed. Three assailants pulled him from his bicycle and attempted to saw off his leg with a chainsaw. They cut through meat and bone, leaving the limb barely attached to his body. Then, as suddenly as the attack began, his attackers disappeared into the darkness. Doctors managed to save his leg and Mhlengi bravely fought back to full recovery – only to lose his leg to infection two years later. Desperate to fulfil his dreams of becoming a champion triathlete, Mhlengi had to start all over again – this time, learning how to walk with one leg before he could swim, run and cycle. In 1979, she set a record for the deepest walk on the ocean floor, having detached from a submersible and explored underwater for two and a half hours. But Dr Earle couldn’t have imagined the crisis facing our oceans through over-fishing, pollution and climate change just a few decades after she began her pioneering work. Now 88 years old, Dr Earle is continuing her life’s mission: to advocate for ocean conservation and educate future generations about the role the seas play in shaping our climate.
