Iconic umbrellas from movies and shows.

It’s no secret that the Penguin is a man with many umbrellas and many tricks. His umbrellas are fitted with guns, knives, swords, and other elaborate gadgets. Throughout the history of the comic books and animated series, Cobblepot has made use of these umbrellas to fight off foes, and his nemesis Batman. Danny DeVito’s character also used them in Batman Returns. Let’s look at other movies or shows where a character used an umbrella.

How I Met Your Mother

The main premise of the show focused on Ted narrating the story to his children about how he met their mother. And this is where the umbrella comes into play … In the season 8 finale we first caught glimpse of the mother, whose face was hidden behind a … you guessed it … yellow umbrella. Cristin Milioti played the mother in the series, and now she stars as the vicious Sofia Falcone in The Penguin, giving an incredible performance. It seems she traded in her umbrella for guns.

Mary Poppins

This iconic character made us fall in love with umbrellas at a young age and had us looking up into the sky, hoping to catch glimpse of one. Remember that iconic moment in Mary Poppins when Poppins (Julie Andrews) descended from the sky, and flew into the Banks's home (and our hearts) with her magic umbrella? Such a priceless moment. Fun fact: Colin Farrell has a connection to Mary Poppins. He starred alongside Emma Thompson in Saving Mr Banks. Thompson played  PL Travers, the author of Mary Poppins, and Farrell played Travers' father.

Harry Potter

Harry Potter is not only known for flying brooms, but also for Hagrid’s pink umbrella. This umbrella is actually Hagrid’s wand. This came as a surprise at first, because the character is rough on the surface, and the idea of him having a pink umbrella was rather contradicting. Soon viewers came to see that Hagrid also has a soft side, and it all finally made sense when he revealed that his pink umbrella is his wand.

Kingsman: The Secret Service

In this spy thriller, the agents have several gadgets to aid them on their outrageous missions. However, it’s the umbrella that Galahad (Colin Firth) uses that stands out the most. This umbrella can give James Bond a run for his money. It contains a ballistic shield for protection and can be used as a glider when airborne.

Singin’ in the Rain

Gene Kelly sings and performs an iconic song and dance sequence in the rain in Singin’ in the Rain. He does this perfectly with an umbrella in his hand. While this umbrella doesn’t possess magic powers, or weapons, or secret compartments, it brings magic to our hearts.

Watch Colin Farrell ask Cristin Milioti how she feels about umbrellas:
