Practicality and being a superhero do not go hand in hand otherwise there would not be any superheroes. It is no secret that superheroes are constantly dancing with death with all the 'saving the world' that they have to do or simply trying to help the kids to cross the street quickly enough so that the bus with failed brakes that is coming straight for them will not hurt them. All in a days work as a superhero, right? On a practical level though, how traumatising is it always to be facing death on the daily? Imagine PTSD being your bestie ? We cannot even begin to think what that must be like.
Hello 'OOTD' !!! May we have a moment of silence for the clothes that have to be ripped apart to reveal the superhero suit underneath. Let us not even start with trying to put on the superhero suit and all the trimmings while fighting off a bad guy. Oh the wasted buttons and material that were once a t-shirt, dress, jeans etc. RIP OOTD. Now think of the heat and wearing spandex, the mere thought sends us running to our fans and practicality has jumped out the window at this point.
How about making plans with a superhero? The answer will always be, 'only if the bad guy/s doesn't try and kill us then I can come for drinks tonight'. How many interventions would you have to have with said superhero for always leaving you on read? Would they even arrive to the intervention that you planned. Practically this is not very feasible. What if the superhero has saved the day and today is the day to celebrate them? How are we even sure that they won't miss events such as their own wedding, the birth of their child, a funeral, a birthday party for a family member? Practically this is really starting to feel bleak.
Lastly something that we take for granted is our safety but practically for a superhero to be the superhero that we love they have to always put themselves in danger for the greater good. When we run from danger they run towards it with all their heart. How impractical, absurd even but if it were not for them how would the world look? The impractical sacrifice far outweighs their comfort and that is what keeps us glued to our screens. We love our superheroes who live outside the realm of the practical.
