The previous round in Spain saw Red Bull’s Max Verstappen claim a third straight win (and fifth from seven full-length races this season) to open a 53-point lead over teammate Sergio Perez at the top of the drivers’ championship standings.

“We had another strong weekend and that's what I like to see from myself and the team, so hopefully we can keep that up throughout the year,” said Max Verstappen, who looks a certainty to go on and win a third straight title.

One of the major narratives of the race in Spain was a massive improvement from Mercedes, with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell coming home in second and third place respectively for a ‘Silver Arrows’ double podium.

“We definitely didn't expect to have the result we had [in Spain], so I just really want to take my hat off to my team and say a big, big thank you to everyone back at the factory for continuing to push and bring us a little bit closer to the [Red] Bulls,” said seven-time world champion Hamilton.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff added, “There's such a long way to go in order to catch Red Bull. We just need to grind away. It's a good moment to see that the development direction is right.”

Wolff added: “I think the learnings are that we have a good race car. I think Lewis was a good five-six seconds behind Max when he cleared Carlos [Sianz, Ferrari], and I think we are just much closer. But you see where the benchmark is. The gap at the end was 20 seconds. Maybe it is 15 in reality but that is just not where we aim to be.”

Ferrari, meanwhile, struggled to find pace and consistency in the previous round, with Charles Leclerc especially struggling, as he had his worst finish of the season, 11th.

“No. I don't understand what we are doing wrong but we are doing something wrong,” said the Monegasque driver. "I went from a first hard to a second hard in the last stint, did exactly the same thing and the car is behaving in a completely different way. We have to understand and work but it's been a few races now where we are struggling with the conditions or having a really peaky car and [Spain] was no better.”
