Single motherhood is a journey filled with love, sacrifice, and unspoken challenges. Yet, the mental and emotional toll on these mothers often goes unnoticed. Mzansi Wethu aims to change that with their new show, I Am a Single Mother and This Is My Story, premiering on Sunday, 17 November at 18:30 CAT on Mzansi Wethu (DStv Channel 163).
The series gives single mothers a platform to share their experiences and struggles, addressing the mental health impact of single parenthood and the need for greater support and awareness. South African women face some of the highest rates of depression and anxiety globally, yet few seek the help they need. This show seeks to highlight the daily pressures single mothers endure, fostering conversations around mental health and emphasizing the importance of specialized counselling services.
“This isn’t just a show for single mothers; it’s for every woman in Mzansi,” says Shirley Adonisi, Director of Local Entertainment Channels. “Mental illness is a common issue, and many will see themselves reflected in these stories. We hope to provide not only awareness but also resources for help.”
Hosted by Nthabiseng Mahlangu, each episode features a heartfelt conversation with a single mother and someone close to her journey. The show also partners with the South African Federation for Mental Health to offer free mental health counselling, with contact information provided at the end of every episode.
Join I Am a Single Mother and This Is My Story to hear these powerful stories, connect to support resources, and find a pathway to healing. Because every single mother deserves to be heard—and helped. Don’t miss the premiere on Mzansi Wethu (DStv Channel 163).
