Coroner S3

While Coroner deals with a kind of after-death treasure hunt for the truth, this is a medically focused series, and it often explores fascinating facts about the human body. The season starts in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic with Jenny and her colleagues at the coroner’s office, including new pathologist Melanie (Uni Park), thoroughly overwhelmed by the flood of bodies – not all of whom were victims of the virus. In her personal life, Jenny, who’s now single again, will embrace some unusual therapies as she gets to grips with her past trauma. And Detective Donovan will have to come to terms with his own looming health crisis. People who’re curious about the body and medical issues have a lot to look forward to, including a visit to a “body farm” where pathologists study the effects of ways of dying and the effects of the environment on the human body.

Grey’s Anatomy S17

Grey’s brings the COVID-19 drama home this season when series lead character Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) catches the virus. We’ve seen her having visions of the late George O’Malley (TR Knight), who joined the show with her as an intern in S1, as well as of her late husband, Derek (Patrick Dempsey), in Episode 2. And in Episode 6 on 22 March (which was the mid-season finale in the US), we’ll see Meredith back on the beach of her visions thanks to a crisis in her situation. With such a central character going through COVID-19, the show leaned heavily on Zoanne Clack, a doctor-turned writer and exec producer who’s been with the show from the word go. Zoanne brought many of her observations of what was happening in real hospitals across the US during the pandemic into the season, making Grey’s even more real and impactful. Even if you’ve never seen the show before, there’s plenty to capture your imagination and really, no better time to become a Grey’s fan.

PS: Episodes 6 and 7 will be crossover episodes with the Grey’s Anatomy spin-off, Station 19.

Station 19 S4

As first responders, the firefighters of Station 19 often work hand-in-hand with the doctors at Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital, as seen in Grey’s Anatomy. Whether they’re dealing with accident victims or victims of human trafficking, they need to communicate closely with medical professionals.

Episode 5 on 22 March and Episode 6 on 29 March of this fire station-based series are crossover episodes with Grey’s Anatomy. Grey’s Dr Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) will be counselling former station Captain Robert Sullivan (Boris Kodjoe) in his struggles with sobriety following the opioid addiction that got him fired as Station 19’s captain, and into his current separation from his wife, firefighting lieutenant Andy Herrera (Jaina Lee Ortiz). And we’ll see the start of the nail-biting human trafficking case that continues in Grey’s on 22 March. This is already the second crossover event of the season as it opened with the first and second episodes also crossing over with Grey’s as the Station 19 team brought some children from a car accident to Grey-Sloan.

The Resident S4

The Resident gets real about not just the blood and guts of the medical profession, but the bitter politics and finances that set doctors and nurses at odds with hospital administration.

Episode 7 on 16 March sees two of the doctors tackling legal issues from somewhat different ends while brilliant surgical resident Mina Okafor (Shaunette Renée Wilson) needs to gather every proof of competence that she can to avoid being deported. Neurosurgeon and Chief of Surgery Dr Barrett Cain (Morris Chestnut) is on a witch hunt for the whistle-blower at Chastain (the series’ hospital) who called attention to the fact that he was keeping brain-dead patients “alive” to make himself and his hospital look more successful on paper. This is one of the show’s most gripping, long-running storylines about the clash between hospital finances and good medical practice.

Coming up in April

The Good Doctor S3

Dr Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) goes into S3 of this medical drama with the challenges and advantages that come with being neurodivergent, both as someone living with autism and as a gifted savant. Shaun will be making great strides in his personal life this season, particularly in his romantic relationships and growing understanding of love and attraction with his friend, Lea (Paige Spara), and colleague, Dr Carly Lever (Jasika Nicole), the hospital’s head pathologist.

Meanwhile, Dr Morgan Reznick (Fiona Gubelmann) will be grappling with the news that she has a potential career-ending medical condition. As well as developing new experimental surgeries, Shaun will prove that he is learning about the benefits of working with others as he hands over a surgery that gets him in over his head. PS: This season was completed before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
