British TV brings the natural world into your world this March and April on DStv with plenty to laugh about and love
There’s no need to be green with envy if you have access to the best of British shows on DStv. We’re going into a full-on green season! March and April are a nature lover’s dream with fantastic documentaries and series that’ll take you all over the world’s wild kingdoms with the likes of Sir David Attenborough, Gordon Buchanan, Prince William and Dame Judi Dench, along with Chris Packham and Gregg Wallace.
If you’re looking to break out of your pandemic slump, there are shows to help you heal your mind and body.
And then there’s some good old fun and entertainment with new seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Top Gear, Grand Designs and Death In Paradise. And brand-new shows to love like Miss Scarlet & The Duke. MasterChef judge Gregg Wallace and mathematician Dr. Hannah Fry are inviting 5 guests to their restaurant for a dinner with a difference. After they make their selections on the menu, Hannah will reveal the real cost of their meal… to the planet, in terms of each dish’s carbon footprint. Food accounts for a third of all greenhouse gas emissions, so Gregg is doing his own part in the kitchen, too. While he cooks for the diners, he’ll be revealing his tips for cooking more sustainably at home.

Wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan came to South Africa to make this 2-episode documentary about a family of wild cheetahs. Tracking them on foot through the Kalahari, we see the world from their perspective as he tries to understand the threats that adults and their cubs face in today’s Africa. We’ll meet a host of fascinating characters including brave cheetah mother Savanna and more experienced mom Chili, who’s guiding her 5 newborn cubs on an epic migration to the feeding grounds, protecting them from lions, hyenas and other natural threats.

The brand-new 8-episode season of this drag competition brings Michelle Visage and RuPaul back to the UK, where they and judges Graham Norton and Alan Carr (along with special guest judges like Liz Hurley and Dawn French) will meet some astoundingly talented and funny drag queens as they take on weekly design, comedy, singing, dancing, acting and makeover challenges. A word of warning: This season is merciless, and some queens who you might pick as winners are going to be early outs for dubious reasons.

Now… how long will it take these detectives to spot William’s crush on Eliza?

Nigella Lawson returns to BBC Lifestyle with a new 6-episode series featuring her calm and sensual enjoyment of cooking. She’ll be using simple techniques to raise familiar ingredients to a different plane. Prepare to hum along with Nigella as she makes and enjoys chocolate peanut butter cake, rich luxurious crab macaroni and cheese, and a fear-free fish stew. It’s all presented as a feast for the eye. Along the way, Nigella will explain the inspiration for her recipes, from her collection of vintage cookbooks to social media.

He’s taking pairs of best friends, mothers and daughters, sisters and cancer survivors on a journey of body acceptance using his unique Naked Therapy, which will see them stripping down in various settings. With years of insecurities driven by messaging about unacceptable bodies in the media, taunts from school bullies and other damaging experiences to contend with, Gok has his work cut out for him.

Saffron Events in Scotland specialises in weddings for Asian brides. And a groom’s sisters need help organising a walima for his bride-to-be, who lives far away.

Actress Dame Judi Dench is walking the lush rainforests, rivers and spectacular coral reef coastlines of Malaysian Borneo in search of its wildlife in this 2-episode series. She’ll also meet sun bears, elephants, a strange gliding mammal called the Kubong, a dung beetle named Bob, and a snake that Judi names James Bond. Judy runs a little wild herself, as she climbs one of the tallest tropical trees on Borneo.

HRH Prince William, The Duke of Cambridge, is on a global mission to support pioneering work of local individuals and organisations behind movements to protect and preserve the natural world. This series follows the Prince over the course of 2 years, from Asia and Africa to the UK’s big cities and his own estate, Sandringham as he talks to passionate conversationalists of all ages, from small children to Sir David Attenborough. The show will touch on everything from rhino and elephant poaching, to protecting clams on the sea bed.

The series takes us on a tour of the national parks and the fantastic animals that they’re home to. In this show, journalist and blogger Mehreen Baig teams up with scientists at Liverpool John Moores University and 100 volunteers, to test how much online workouts really improve your fitness, and to discover the tricks to help you stick with it and avoid giving up. Mehreen wants to make sure she’s not wasting her effort or her money.

And we’ll find out what a team from Imperial College London uncovered when they surveyed the mental health of over 350,000 people across the UK before and during the pandemic.

The guys will be trying out “mid-life crisis cars”, as well as taking on a challenging off-road adventure in the Scottish Highlands and driving some of the most iconic cars from the James Bond films. For a special touch, they’ll be trying out the cars that their own dads drove way back when. There are also reviews of the new Toyota GR Yaris, the Ferrari Roma and more.

A Perfect Planet S1
Sir David Attenborough presents this 6-episode series about the forces and planetary systems that drive life on Earth, including volcanos, the sun, the oceans, the weather and humankind – each of which is covered in its own episode. The sixth episode takes us behind the scenes to reveal how the camera crew got those jaw-dropping shots. The research is extensive and the camera footage is simply incredible. And the storytelling focuses on how animals survive harsh environments across the planet such as volcanic islands, alkaline lakes, deserts and snowfields. It’s an entertaining, top-notch piece of education that’ll have the whole family wide-eyed in wonder.

Soapie star and host of Slank and Kom Ons Jol, Leandie du Randt, is presenting the first-ever season of the reality dating show, Love Island South Africa. A group of sexy single South Africans are converging on a swanky villa in Cape Town prepared for a summer of romance, friendship and fun. Every few days, they’ll have to pair off with someone they fancy, and it’s hard luck when some people are on everyone’s “want” list, and some, not so much. If nobody wants you, so sorry, you’re off the “island”. But even those who’re coupled up can’t just kick back in the pool together. There are new people arriving on the island, offering new temptations. And challenges will make people re-think their choices when it turns out it’s not enough just to be hot. Meanwhile, viewers will get their say too.

He’ll be sampling local cuisine like vetkoek and bobotie and learning new skills in the kitchen Mzansi-style.

A year has passed since the events of the Riviera S2 finale. We love a tasty British crime thriller! In this 4-episode series set in Scotland, grieving mom Anna (Kelly Macdonald) goes on trial for inciting violence after she posts the address of a local bus driver online, identifying him as the man who murdered her child 14 years earlier. The bus driver’s lawyer has his own axe to grind, having been falsely accused of a crime himself. The series digs into what happens when people have had their trial but feel that justice has not been done.

In this 6-episode series, actor and comedian Griff Rhys Jones is venturing around Australia by train, motorbike, dinghy, bungee cord, parachute, small plane, camel and even his own feet. He’ll go everywhere, from Perth to Kalgoorlie and Darwin to Uluru, dodging deadly Aussie wildlife and soaring temperatures along the way, and giving us a crash course in Australian slang and pastimes. Highlights include a visit to the partly underground opal mining town of Coober Pedy, and Griff getting desert survival tips from an Aboriginal elder.

French fishing enthusiast Cyril Chauquet is looking for the most dangerous underwater creatures in the world. This season begins in Polynesia, where he is on the trail of a fish known in local legends as the Uruati, but he might become the hunted when he dives into a shark’s playground. Danger isn’t far away in his next destination, either: A deserted island off the West coast of Panama, where he is in search of the Dienton, a species of fish notorious for its massive teeth.

In this 5-episode series, adventurer Ben Fogle is in Africa on a conservation mission with a team of wildlife experts. He’ll be talking to poachers, hunters and conservationists to understand the complex politics and economic forces behind plummeting species population numbers and habitat destruction. Ben will also tackle the pandemic dangers posed by the bushmeat trade, and meeting the people and communities in South Africa, Namibia, Uganda, Kenya and Liberia who’re driving change and education to preserve Africa’s wild places and wildlife.

If you have a yearning for historical series, there’s plenty of British ones: the royal drama Victoria (S1-3), the WW2 submarine drama Das Boot (S1-2), the WW2 hotel drama and spy series The Halcyon, and the Jane Austen historical romance Sanditon.
Comedy fans and light drama lovers can get on board for Good Karma Hospital (S1-S3), which is available to stream first on Showmax.
For crime thriller fans, Rig 45 (S1-2) is a murder mystery aboard an oil rig around Christmas, and it’s a must-watch. There’s also the Ireland-based Taken Down S1, the crime drama series, The Bay, surveillance footage conspiracy thriller The Capture and star-studded Guy Ritchie drug empire crime caper The Gentlemen.
If you love a Brit flick rom-com, the classic Notting Hill is also on Showmax while the all-time favourite, Four Weddings and A Funeral, is coming to Showmax on Thursday, 25 March.

Tense docu-drama film Official Secrets joins the slate from Thursday, 18 March. South African director Gavin Hood presents Keira Knightley as whistle-blower Katharine Gun, who exposed the illegal activities of the US and British intelligence services ahead of the Iraq War.
There’s more Keira coming up in the British comedy-drama, Misbehaviour, on Thursday, 18 March. The movie is based on the story of British women who subverted the 1970 Miss World pageant. The cast includes Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Lesley Manville, Jessie Buckley, Keeley Hawes, Rhys Ifans, Charlotte Spencer and Emma Corrin. Look out for Loreece Harrison as Miss Africa South Pearl Jansen.
Wild Rose on Monday, 29 March, stars Jessie Buckley (see her in Misbehaviour too) as an ex-con mother of two who has big dreams of becoming a country singing star.

Britcrime thriller series The Victim S1 arrives on Showmax on Thursday, 1 April, along with the Martin Freeman series, A Confession, which is based on a real-life police case.
Victorian-era HBO Joss Whedon (Marvel’s Avengers) sci-fi drama series The Nevers S1 launches on Monday, 19 April. The series focuses on The Touched, a gang of women with unusual abilities who’re on a mission to change the world. The cast is led by Laura Donnelly (Britannia, Outlander, Tolkien) and British Independent Film Award winner Olivia Williams (Dollhouse, Counterpart) and includes BAFTA nominee James Norton (Grantchester, War & Peace).
