Who will be the next Nigerian Idol?

As one of the biggest platforms for discovering and showcasing African talent, it received quite the reception when the launch of Season 6 was announced.

Idols itself is a global phenomenon that has catapulted many famous musos to stardom. So, when the show reached the African continent back in 2010, it received a very warm welcome. Fast forward to 2021 and its popularity continues to skyrocket with more than one African country hosting its own version.

At the end of 2020, when online auditions were held for Season 6 of Nigerian Idols, the competition had to process over 3600 entries. The judges - Obi Asika, Seyi Shay and DJ Sose - spent a great deal of time going through each entry to select the final few who would make it through to the televised show.

Are you ready for Theatre Week?

After four weeks of auditions, 68 contestants received golden tickets and have made the cut for Theatre Week. This is the time where contestants are given the opportunity to sing their hearts out while receiving guidance from the judges. Of course, there’s no forgetting the role that the show’s host, TV personality IK Osakioduwa, plays in it all: offering a shoulder to cry on, a voice of reason and some much-needed comedic relief every once in a while.

Theatre Week paves the way for the rest of the competition. It’s where some of Nigeria’s finest singing talent finally has the opportunity to showcase their individuality by taking on some of the globe’s most popular hits.

The future is bright for these Nigerian stars

Not that we need to explain why, but the mere fact that these 68 hopefuls have reached this point in the competition is an indication of their talent. We’ve seen so many stars from previous seasons continue to share their beautiful sound with the world.

Think about it; Mercy Chinwo from Season 2 still releases music and has even given acting a shot, and Evelyn Zibili from Season 4 is a singer, songwriter and judge on Old Mutual’s Amazing Voices Season 2. Let’s not forget about the men that have won Nigerian Idols. Moses Adigwe was the first male to win the competition back in Season 3, and he currently runs a music consulting agency, while Kunle Ogunrombi (or K-Peace) from Season 4 continues to share his gift with the world. Of course, we could never forget the first-ever winner of the competition, Onyekachi Elizabeth Gilbert, also known as Yeka Onka, who is now a worship minister, certified digital marketer, and entrepreneur.

Any way that you choose to look at it, Nigerian Idol has helped to shape the future of so many people. With the new season currently underway, we are excited to see what talent is waiting to be shared with the world.
