The Refugee Olympic Team has been one of the most heart-warming stories at the Games ever since their introduction at Rio 2016. At Paris 2024, they earned their first medal, a Bronze, thanks to Cameroon-born Boxer Cindy Ngamba in the Women’s 75kg division.

Simone Biles makes a glorious return.

After her Tokyo 2020 campaign was derailed by the ‘twisties’, American Simone Biles roared back to top form in Paris and underlined her status as one of the greatest ever Artistic Gymnasts with trio of Gold medals in the team all-around, individual all-around and vault, along with a Silver in the floor exercise.

The Botswana sprinter had a burgeoning reputation heading into the Men’s 200m at Paris 2024, but he was expected to be overshadowed by the likes of Noah Lyles and Kenneth Bednarek of the United States. Instead, Tebogo put in a world-leading and African-record time of 19.46 to claim his country’s first-ever Gold medal.

Novak Djokovic claims ‘Golden Slam’

A ‘Golden Slam’ in Tennis is the latest career milestone for Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, who defeated Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets in the Men’s Singles final to lay his hands on a Gold medal – the only prize in the sport that has evaded the highly-decorated 37-year-old.

In the greatest 100m sprint race ever, Noah Lyles of the United States took Gold ahead of Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson by just 0.005 (five thousandths) of a second. All eight participants finished with times under 10 seconds – a first in the history of Athletics.

Africa has its first Olympic medalist in Artistic Gymnastics thanks to Algeria’s Kaylia Nemour, who earned a score of 15.700 in the Women’s Uneven Bars to claim Gold ahead of Qiu Qiyuan and Sunisa Lee.

Thrilling Men’s Football final

The Gold medal match in Men’s Football was an absolute thriller, with Spain defeating hosts France 5-3 after extra time. Thierry Henry’s Les Bleus fought back from 3-1 down to take the game to an extra 30 minutes, but La Roja’s Sergio Camello had the last laugh with two goals to win Spain their second Gold medal in Men’s Football.

Early in the Olympics, France’s Men’s Sevens Rugby team gave the host nation their first Gold medal with a brilliant 28-7 win over Fiji in the final – inspired by the genius of Antoine Dupont.

Bol’s Dutch delight

Femke Bol spearheaded a sensational comeback for the Netherlands to claim Gold in the 4×400m Mixed Relay. The Dutch were lagging behind in fourth by the time Bol received the baton, but she burst ahead in the final lap, clocking 47.93 to claim the title for the Dutch in a thrilling finish.

Beatrice Chebet’s distance double

Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet cemented her status as a track distance running legend with Gold medals in both the Women’s 5000m and 10,000m races. “This 10,000m gold medal, I can describe it as the most important medal in my life," she said. "I came here targeting the 10,000m gold medal, not a gold in 5,000m.”
