The 2021-22 Premier League season saw Manchester City claim the title for a fourth time in the past five years, though their scrap with Liverpool went right down to the wire, with Pep Guardiola’s side coming from two goals down to beat Aston Villa 3-2 on the final day – one of the most exhilarating climaxes to a season in history!
“Four Premier Leagues – these guys are legends already; people have to admit it. This group of players are absolutely eternal in this club because what we achieved is so difficult,” said Guardiola.
Liverpool came home in second place, just one point behind Man City, while Chelsea were third and Tottenham Hotspur – inspired by the arrival of serial winner Antonio Conte – claimed fourth place and will return to the UEFA Champions League next season.
Arsenal and Manchester United (the latter of which endured a truly terrible season, first under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and then with interim manager Ralf Rangnick) secured UEFA Europa League qualification, while West Ham United ended seventh after a strong campaign to secure a spot in the UEFA Europa Conference League.
Down at the bottom of the log, Norwich City and Watford were predictable relegation candidates, while Burnley joined them in the drop to the EFL Championship – allowing Leeds United and Everton to get away with having really poor seasons.
The three promoted teams which will join the Premier League for 2022-23 are Fulham, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest – the latter returns to the top flight for the first time since 1999.
Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne was the Player of the Season, Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson kept the most clean sheets (20), and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Tottenham’s Son Heung-min shared the Golden Boot prize with 23 goals apiece.
The 2022-23 season is scheduled to begin on 6 August and run until 28 May next year.
