SuperSport, the biggest sports broadcaster in Africa, brings viewers on DStv all the action from the PGA Tour’s Genesis Invitational, live from the Riviera Country Club in California from Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 February 2024.
First played in 1926 as the Los Angeles Open, this tournament is considered one of the PGA Tour’s concluding events of the ‘West Coast Swing’ early in the calendar year, before the tour moves east to Florida.
The Genesis Invitational is one of only five tournaments given "invitational" status by the PGA Tour, and consequently it has a reduced field of only 120 players (as opposed to most full-field open tournaments with a field of 156 players). The other four are the Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, Charles Schwab Challenge, and the Memorial Tournament.
The reigning champion is Jon Rahm, who shot 267 (-17) in the 2023 edition to finish two strokes ahead of Max Homa. However, Rahm’s recent defection to LIV Golf means he will not be present at the Riviera Country Club to defend his title.
The tournament, which is hosted by golf legend Tiger Woods, will feature a string field, as the likes of Patrick Cantlay, Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler, Tyrrell Hatton, Max Homa, Viktor Hovland, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Justin Rose, Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth and Cameron Young compete in Los Angeles.
The field will also boast Chase Johnson, the recipient of the Charlie Sifford Memorial Exemption. Awarded annually since 2009, the Sifford exemption represents the advancement of diversity in the game of golf.
“Chase earned the 2024 Charlie Sifford Memorial Exemption with his play over the past year,” Woods said. “He let his game speak for itself, and that is something I know Charlie would be proud of.”
Last year was a banner season for Johnson, with significant accomplishments on the PGA Tour, Korn Ferry Tour and the Advocates Professional Golf Association (APGA) Tour. Johnson is looking to keep his momentum going this year.
“I am beyond excited to receive the Charlie Sifford Memorial Exemption and to play in The Genesis Invitational,” Johnson said. “Tiger has been an inspiration to me, and I look forward to putting my game to the test at Riviera and playing in honor of Mr. Sifford.”
