Monday’s Round of 16 action begins at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, with Cape Verde tackling Mauritania.

The Blue Sharks were the revelation of the first round, topping Group B with an unbeaten record ahead of Egypt, Ghana and Mozambique, while the Lions of Chinguetti sensationally eliminated former champions Algeria to advance as the third-place team from Group D behind Angola and Burkina Faso.

“I am so proud of my players,” said Cape Verde coach Bubista. “They applied the instructions perfectly, what makes me even more proud is their behaviour on the pitch. When one loses the ball, another recovers it. I liked seeing this solidarity.”

The second match of the day sees defending AFCON champions Senegal face up to hosts Cote d’Ivoire at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro.

The Teranga Lions have looked imperious in the defence of their title thus far, as they topped Group C with a perfect record of three wins (over Gambia, Cameroon and Guinea), while the Elephants only just squeezed through as one of the best third-place teams – and have already axed their coach, Jean-Louis Gasset.

“We knew that things would not be easy. We won all our matches in the first round. There are now four matches remaining. We must keep our feet on the ground and continue working,” said Senegal defender Abdoulaye Seck.
