Tafe Fonton
Fonton is the 56 year old who tends to think the world owes him a living. Everything that has ever gone wrong in his life is someone else’s fault and not his. He was especially resentful of his brother, Oviyon’s father, for being a more successful farmer than him and tried, upon his brother’s death, to coopt the lands left behind. This has resulted in tension between him and his nephew Oviyon that lasts till this day.
Greedy and scheming, Fonton often lives beyond his means, leading to his need to scheme even more to cover his debts. His first marriage was to the Matron Zansi, but he felt her career and training as a nurse made her disrespectful and the marriage ended. He has been married twice since, neither of which have worked out. The most recent was to a woman 40 years his junior, who has managed to make his life a living hell by showing him a level of disrespect he never even imagined. .
Fonton is highly superstitious and so far has dabbled in charms as protection but his shifting goalpost means that his definition of what is defense and what is attack is constantly evolving.
He has four children, including a son with whom Oviyon is close, who lives in Lagos. None of his children are in Aji.
